Child Behavior And How To Discipline Children Using Chore Charts

Chore charts or behavior charts are charts that are used to teach children responsibility. The charts are good because when they are in place arguments are lessened and the children learn to take any chore given to them seriously. The charts also get children to help around the house with minimum effort on the part of the parent. There are various charts that have different themes and layouts which every family can use depending on their preferences and needs.

These charts are important because of the following:

> Allows the child to do their chores at a convenient time because they will know what is expected of them every day, and they can do their chores at a time which is convenient for them. This helps the child balance the activities of the day.

> Having the chore chart means that parents do not have to keep on asking the child about the chore since it can be posted on the chart. This also helps the child because they will not have to wait to be told what chores they should do.

> Having the chart in a visible place will be a reminder for the children of what is expected. This is because the chore chart will be a visual reminder of the chores that need to be done.

> A chore chart motivates the children because seeing that they do their chores in good time motivates them to work faster so that they can have the satisfaction of finishing the chore and moving on to do something they like.

For the behavior charts to work, the following factors should be taken into consideration:

> The age of the children.

> Their capability of doing the chore.

> The time the children have.

> An allowance or reward should be given because it will show the children that you appreciate what they are doing and it will also act as an incentive for them.

> When the children get all their chores done on time and without being told they can be rewarded with something special which they have been desiring.

> When setting up a reward system, it is important to consider what the child likes and their ages because some of the young children may just want their favorite meal as an incentive. Therefore involve the child in the rewards and they will be able to participate with no issues.

> The charts should always be created together with the child. This encourages the child to be responsible.

> The charts should have goals that can be measured so that you are able to know if the chore has been done or not.

> The desired outcome should be expressed in a positive language. This encourages the children to do the right thing without feeling condemned.

> Start with one specific action and stick with that goal until it is realized then move to another one.

> Getting the desired results can take time therefore it is important to be patient with the child. Do not stop using the chart because you cannot see any change for a number of days.

> For the chore charts to work, there is need for consistency because it will build trust between you and your child as well as allow your child to feel comfortable with the process of using charts.

Finally, for the chore charts to work well, the children need to be constantly reminded that the chores are not to punish them but to make them learn how to become responsible. These charts are very effective when used correctly. The charts are also good because the children are able to do their chores without being constantly reminded.
